No Shelter From The Storm

I had been a little absent from this site the last few weeks due to a little holiday trip, and when I came back the motherboard of my computer decided to not work anymore. So I had no chance to post something fresh lately.

I had a very eventful shooting the other night. I went to the island of Hailuoto, which is a gorgeous place to shoot. Unfortunately it was very windy that evening, so I didn't do a lot of shots that I would have liked to do. There are beautiful scenes with flowers out there right now, but they were moving so much in the wind that getting a sharp image was impossible. So I decided to take the best out of that situation, and experiment with some more blurry frames.

I hope the weather will change soon, so that I have a chance to go back there.

I took quiet a few frames at the coast, which I will post later. I got attacked twice by some vicious birds and they also took the opportunity to s**t on my tripod!

But this one I captured already on my way back to the ferry. I liked the colours of the scene and the movement of the grass.

William L. Grayson Stadium, home of the Savannah Sandgnats, Daffin Park, Savannah, GA.

We live right across the street from the park and the stadium, which is one of the oldest in the country. I just love the energy of all the activities that are always going on. Right now baseball is in full swing, of course, and we've only recently started going to some Sandgnats games on a more regular basis. I'm a football fan first and foremost, but I am starting to get a feel for the other all american sport. They shoot off fireworks every weekend after the 'Gnats games when they play at home, so it's like the Fourth of July all the time around here!

I should be out at Saquish right now enjoying the parade and hopefully, getting some good pics for the blog.

I had to reach back into the archives to find a decent photo from the 4th of July. This picture is from 2005. I thought it was a fun photo and very patriotic. It's funny to see how little the kids look only three years ago.

I'm not much of a parade person but I do love the Saquish parades. I always get a front row seat. I enjoy watching the decorated trucks, floats and people, going up and down the beach. And of course, I love the candy that they throw at those of us watching.

Yeah, it's pretty disgusting but it was just screaming to have it's picture taken! Apparently, someone had a pretty good meal with this big guy. I'd say this fish was close to 30 inches long. I'm assuming someone threw it into the ocean but the tide wasn't strong enough to take it out to sea.

It's not unusual to come across clam and lobster shells while walking Saquish beach but I don't think I've ever come across a fish this big. I doubt it's what most people want to come across when they take the kids down to the water with a bucket and pail!

Yesterday, we had lunch in Ter Leepe near Bruges. This restaurant is famous for its delicious meals and I have to admit... I was astonished. Here you see one of the starters. Let me try to describe what's on the dish: a Norway lobster on a bed of tomato, a gel of fried chicken and carrot cream on the left, tamarillo and spaghetti of Norway lobster bouillon on the right.

Warning: I feel a rant coming on… and after all isn’t that what BLOGS are all about? Those who know me are aware of my rants… especially my loving wife.

She has repeatedly heard me rant on about such things as the peculiar habit of the Maine Traffic Planners (hah!) to create lanes on a roadway, only to remove them – suddenly and with scarcely a heartbeats advance notice. But that is for another time…

Or perhaps the declaration by motorcyclists (of which I am one and have been riding longer than driving a car) that it is OK for them to ignore noise ordinances and have open pipes because it is safer. People can hear them when they can’t be seen. BullSh*t. Sound travels away from the rear of the bike not forward (perhaps they should retake that basic physics class) and as such they are only heard when they are in front of vehicles. Attention bikers: Get a powerful horn, keep your eyes open, and oh, maybe wear a helmet?

But that’s a rant for another time…

Ok – so I got the mini rant out of my system – for the moment. Someone remind me in a week or so to get back on the rant train and explore the two above, and a few more… perhaps even on the topic of photography. Like how folks with cameras aren’t always photographers. Click the shutter enough times and play long enough in Photoshop and sure, almost anyone can get art. The difference is making art ON DEMAND. When the client wants it. Communicating the client’s message. Starting with a blank slate.

So please remind me to rant on about that in the near future….

Today’s ramblings are focused on an issue much more relevant then any of the above.

GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY.

I just did, and it was a fabulous feeling. Last Wednesday I, and a wonderful group of volunteers, managed to take portraits of 38 children & their families in the space of 4 hours at a beautiful lakeside summer camp. The camp is for children with life threatening illness & their families. For some, this may be the last time they will ever be photographed. Others will see the photographs as a celebration of a deadly battle won. We will not know. We just came to give them the gift we bring – beautiful photographs of the beautiful children.

It started for me when working with my wife, Sharyn, on a video for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. [You can see her work here: http://www.wonderdogfilms.com . The MCCP video is not on the site yet though] I saw just what these kids were going through, and how amazing they were. And how incredibly heartbreaking it is.

I had heard about an organization called Flashes of Hope that arranges photo shoots by ASMP photographers for the children. So I brought the program to Maine. It turns out they already had an interest in doing a shoot at Camp Sunshine in Maine. It was a perfect fit at the right time.

So we had four photographers: me, Jeff Stevensen, Jim Daniels, and Darren Setlow. Assisting were Scott Brouseau, Corey Fenders, Nathan Broaddus and Jessica Materna.

We also had Nance Trueworthy shuffling subjects to and fro, as well as three volunteers from the Boston Flashes of Hope chapter.

All these folks did this for nothing. Nada. Zip. Goose eggs.

No. Sorry that’s a lie. This is it. Real dialog between myself & a mom at the shoot:

Mom: “…so we will get to see some proofs and then what? Do we order prints from you? Is that how it works?”

K: “No. I will edit the shoot, and you will receive, in a few weeks time, a portfolio of two 8x10s, a bunch of 4x6s, and the files on disc”

Mom: “ Oh. So then we can order more from you?”

K: “No. You will have the files. Just take them to your local photo printer and away you go!”

Mom: “You’re kidding?!” So - what’s in it for YOU?!”

K: “THIS is what’s in it for me. Right now. This moment.”

With that Mom began to tear up, as did photog, assistant, and even the squirrels watching from the branches above…

Which brings me to the next point: while we all donated our time, some things can not be found for free. (Try getting the USPS to donate anything!) It cost about $1,000 to get the prints to the families, even with the lab donating the prints. I did a mass email (ok – is 45 people “mass”?) and raised $1,150. at last count. Now, in order to get the Maine Chapter off the ground, which will mean doing shoots at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland, we need to get the number up to around $5000.

On Saturday July 12 (11am – 2pm) we are having a fund raising BBQ at Big Moose Harley Davidson (please don’t tell them about my previous mini rant! – yet&hellip through the Southern Maine Portland Harley Owners Group.

Anyway… I have gone on and on today and must get to work! Look for more photos from the shoot on my website or this blog in the near future…

This rose was located in one of the houses on Plympton's Antique House and Garden Tour. Now, I've seen radishes cut to look like a rose. I've even had the paper from the straw of my drink turned into a rose, but I've never seen toilet paper so uniquely displayed. I must say I was very impressed with this little detail.

I'm sure there are plenty of jokes that could be made about smelling like a rose and the derriere, but I'll just keep my head above the toilet water on this one.

Well, folks, here we are: two days in a row! These will probably (maybe) be my last posts from this series at the skatepark. The first image is a single shot while the second image was created using the same process as in "The River Rail Yard" though not to the same extreme. I thought some of you would be interested in seeing both versions: one image by itself and another as a composite of a number of images.

The words "go up" really didn't make any sense to me. Though I loved the graffiti throughout the skate park, those words made little sense and probably only distracts from these images. All the same, I like having another view of the place, this time from one end so that the viewer can see more of the park.

Plympton Paradise

A couple weekends ago, Plympton had an "Antique House and Garden Tour." One of the houses on the tour, was the Reverend Ezra Sampson House, 1776. The house is located on the Plympton Green and in the mid 19th century it was known as "Plympton House" a local tavern.

Today it is a beautifully restored home with five fireplaces- one of them being 2-3 times bigger than a normal fireplace. The part I enjoyed most was actually outside the house. There were at least four different gardens spread throughout the backyard that held plants, herbs, statues and fountains. Then there was this pool area. I would never have known this piece of paradise was located behind the house. As you can see it is spectacular. The pool house is an old restored barn with the inside as beautiful as the outside.

I don't know anything about skatboarding (other than it's pretty fun to photograph). All I know is that there's no way I could do this...

They're quite random at this point, but Noah's facial expressions are so diverse at times. This is the second shot in a series of three where in the first and last frame he's smiling. That serious look in his eyes was quite a surprise as I was going through these photos. I kept the contrast in the general skin area low and tried to put the focus on the eyes. As for the end result, I'm quite happy. Then again, I might be a little biased :D

So this weekend I was being a PeddleTramp instead of a PaddleTramp. I was biking along the Mississippi River with my bright yellow bike, my headphones, my smile and of course my camera. I was biking on this sandy path and I came across a lady that said, "Turtle on the path ahead." This is when my smile got just a little bit brighter and I soon found myself belly down in sand bonding with my new little prehistoric looking friend.

This is my last photo in what I will dub as my Great Finch Project. I was excited when all 5 mouths started opening, the 6th bird had no interest in my photographics and is pretty much hidden off to camera left, except for a few tufts of hair behind one of his brothers. About 2 minutes after this photo, the bird on camera right flew off to independence. Each day there-after a bird left...and I am now suffering from Empty Nest Syndrome. I hear from the neighbors that they are doing well, contributing in a positive way to society and using their manners when feeding off of new feeders. I would like to think I raised them right and hopefully they will come back to help take care of me when I am an elderly lady and need a few strong men around to help me with the chores.

Last week I posted a shot of Splash Fountain where I mentioned that young and old could run through the fountain to cool off. I also mentioned that it would be nice to get a shot of kids playing in the fountain. On Friday, I was walking by the area with my brother, sister-in-law and cousin, when we came across such a scene. Of course I had to stop and take a photo. I can understand why they named it Splash Fountain.

In this photo, Jessica wanted to be a woman from a Johannes Vermeer painting. So we chose this painting to match. The real kudos goes to Jessica's husband, who created the coat the night before. Oh, and did I mention that we shot this mid morning and it had to be on press that afternoon? My Wacom Tablet was smokin' that day...

Today we go from one bridge to another.

Though not quite as aesthetically pleasing as the Brooklyn Bridge, this decrepit railroad crossing in Casco Bay proved an interesting subject for photographic exploration.

To get to the point at which this image was snapped, I had to carefully make my way, making sure to avoid rotten beams, out over the tranquil waters of Casco Bay roughly fifty yards away from solid ground. Let me tell you, between the fog limiting visibility to barely 20 feet and the constantly creaking, half-rotten wooden structure, the trip out was quite nerve racking.

As always, the treacherous journey turned out to be well worth it in the end. I couldn’t imagine a cooler way to present this dilapidated trestle than shrouded in a thick layer of fog.

I will be anxious to hear your thoughts on this one!

Some friends of mine from Egypt were totally grossed out to find that I let my dog sleep on my bed/couch/lap. One tried to explain exactly how gross she found it by saying that letting him do that is the equivalent of me licking a sewer rat. I love differences between cultures and the way some things that are normal in one culture are absolutely vile in another. Anyway, tomorrow I will post a picture of me licking my pet sewer rat...

Tiger Lily

Lately, I've been reading more about photography than I've been taking pictures...so today I got my camera and took some pictures! I can read all I want - but I'm not going to get any better if I don't take what I read and apply it to my photos. Hopefully, I've demonstrated some of my newly acquired knowledge in this photo of a lovely tiger lily.

This was taken with natural light coming in through a window with my 100mm macro - which is why it's such a long exposure. Other than being cropped a bit and increasing the blacks - not much post here. I expect to post at least one more tiger lily from today's shoot soon. Enjoy.

I know this shot has been taken countless times. The image has been permanently stamped into our minds.

However, when you stand there in the shadow of these massive granite pillars, amongst the spider web of steel cables, listening to the traffic fly by a level below, you can’t help but feel a sense of awe.

This thing was built well over a century ago, and with little to no help it has withstood not only the test of time but also some of the harshest carriage, foot, and now motor vehicle traffic anywhere in the world. Take a moment and think about the engineering and brute labor that went into making this iconic crossing a reality.

Humanity has proven, time and time again, that the impossible is within reach.

Another finch photo in my latest project. Every day I photographed these birds, hoping one would look at me in the eye. It was not easy in a nest of 6 babies, but finally one day a curious bird stared at me for a long time. Maybe he was wondering why the front of my long beak was made of round glass. Or maybe he could see his reflection in my lens and was admiring his new self.
