Campanile de Giotto vu du sommet du Duomo

Le campanile de Giotto est la tour campanile de l'église Santa Maria del Fiore, la cathédrale de Florence, située place du Duomo.

Sa fondation remonte à 1298, date du début du chantier de la nouvelle cathédrale que dirige Arnolfo di Cambio.

Sa position est inhabituelle, aligné avec la façade, probablement due au besoin de libérer la zone absidale pour la grande coupole prévue dans le projet d'Arnolfo di Cambio.

Suite à la mort d'Arnolfo en 1302, le peintre Giotto di Bondone reprend le chantier en 1334 comme maître-maçon, et s'occupe d'abord de la construction du soubassement de la tour. Son projet global (jamais réalisé) d'une hauteur totale de 110-115 m, prévoit un sommet pyramidal de 50 brasses florentines de haut (environ 30 m).

Il meurt en 1337, laissant le chantier inachevé et son nom au bâtiment.

Andrea Pisano continue le travail, mais il meurt de l'épidémie dite de la peste noire en 1348.

Les travaux sont repris par Francesco Talenti en 1349, qui finira le campanile et lui donnera sa forme actuelle définitive en résolvant le problème de l'équilibre de l'édifice par les pilastres permettant de grandes ouvertures.

La base quadrangulaire est de 14,45 m, la hauteur de 84,70 m. La terrasse du sommet est accessible par un escalier de 414 marches.

Les cinq niveaux sont couverts de marbres polychromes comme le corps de la cathédrale et le baptistère Saint-Jean soit du marbre blanc de Carrare, vert de Prato, rose de Maremme et rouge de Sienne.

This Week: Pentax at the Farm

I have to say that I have been amazed at how welcoming and patient the film community is as I have bombarded several different people with questions about film, cameras and scanning. I would list them here, but there are really too many. Each person has given me a different piece of the puzzle that I am slowly putting together. I look forward to the day when I can answer questions for someone else.

The Ilyushin Il-76 is cargo plane built in Russia and it is quite a machine. We loaded this one out to Russia this past Saturday night here in Houston, Texas. The night loading gave an opportunity for some cool shots.

St. Mary's by the sea is an historic 1880 fully restored non-denominational church. The chapel, situated in the heart of Port Douglas, has a huge glass altar window with views of the Coral Sea and rainforest clad mountains.

I photographed this little creature today in the glasshouse at RHS Wisley.

The butterflies were making a guest appearance for one month only. They were most beautiful.

I gave away two of my cards to other butterfly admirers - I hope you like the shot. I post one image every two days or so.

This Week: Pentax at the Farm

Before we begin, I have to say yay Saints!

I've talked a little bit here about my desire to make film photography a larger part of my workflow. I have dabbled with toy cameras for a few years, but it was only dabbling. In the fall of last year I began feeling like I was taking the same kinds of photos over and over again. Retreading the same paths and seeing things the same way. I wanted a way to breathe some new life into my photography and I decided that focusing on film would be a good way to reenergize myself. I tend to take two, three, four shots that are similar on my digital camera and just sort it out later. With film I take one so I really have to think about it before I take it.

I wanted an SLR so I bought a Pentax MX in December. The Pentax MX is a fully manual film camera. It has a built in light meter, but that's it. There will be lots of learning going on as I finally learn how aperture and shutter speed work, as I get the hang of choosing film and as I deal with what I think is going to be the biggest challenge, scanning. You will certainly still see digital pictures as I have Chicago and Panama photos and I will still use my 50D for events, but I'm excited to introduce the Pentax MX era here at Photine.

This is a beautiful rose garden in the Fenway area. We had a lot of rain last spring/summer which did some damage to the roses. However, the garden still looked beautiful.

We've been in Florida for one full week. The weather has been cloudy and in the low 70s and windy. Yesterday was very cool. Only in the low 60s. Today and tomorrow are supposed to be very nice. I hear there could be snow when I head back on Wednesday. I better enjoy the warmth while I can.

Cette vue de la La cathédrale Santa Maria dei Fiori est prise depuis le campanile de Giotto (comme celle du Battistero di San Giovanni)

La coupole (duomo) de Brunelleschi qui a fait pâlir d'envie les rivaux de Sienne est élevée à la gloire de Dieu par l'orgueil des hommes. Symbole de la richesse et de la puissance des florentins du 13e et 14e siècle, il a fallu 14 ans pour la réaliser, à 50 m de hauteur. Elle mesure 4 m d'épaisseur sur 50 m de largeur.

L'extérieur est entièrement marqueté de marbre vert (de Prato), rouge (de Maremma) et blanc (de Carrare), comme le campanile et le Baptistère.

Les verticales n'ont pas été corrigées afin de ne pas perdre trop d'image.

Literally, the word "volkswagen" means "people's car. The beginning concept originated with Ferdinand Porsche in 1930.

By 1933 Hitler had met with Porsche to describe his vision of a 'peoples car'. A top speed of 62 mph ,33 miles to the gallon and the ability

to carry 5 passengers. At this point the 'state' stepped in and bankrolled the development of what would become the VW Beetle. The first demonstrators rolled out in 1939. The preproduction model was called the VW38 as it was manufactured in 1938 When the V38s were introduced, Hitler abruptly changed the name of the car to KdF Wagen. KdF stood for "Kraft durch Freude" which meant"Strength through Joy." This upset Porsche, as he was not a member of the Nazi party, and he didn't support Hitler's use of propaganda when advertising the car.

Some are 'prettier' than others, but I like to photograph Texas' 254 County Courthouses - a goal is to document every one - anyway, I pass by this one for Palo Pinto County and winter is the only time you can really get a good view of the building without foliage in the pecan trees.

This Week: CTA Stations

Some of the stations were very spare, some were more photogenic like this one, but all of them had a working class charm about them, at least to me. These were not pretty stations for tourists, but used day in and day out by the citizens of Chicago. I have to say that this is one of my favorite themes from the trip. I am happy with every photo in the set.

I don't pull out the 55-250mm lens as much as I should but when I do I'm very happy with the results. This duck was relaxing in the late afternoon sun at the Public Garden. I probably could have done a little dodging and burning on this image so the face was a little brighter and the foreground wasn't so bright but I really liked the natural lighting and left it as is.

Un peu d'histoire...

Le Baptistère Saint-Jean (Battistero di San Giovanni), vu ici depuis le somment du campanile de Giotto qui culmine à plus de 84 mètres (414 marches !) est considéré comme le plus ancien bâtiment de la ville. Il est reconnu comme bel exemple d'architecture romane de Toscane.

Ce bâtiment est célèbre pour ses magnifiques portes de bronze ornées de bas-reliefs et notamment la porte Est réalisée en 1401 par Lorenzo Ghiberti. Michel Ange la surnomma "la Porte du Paradis". Ornée de bas-reliefs, elle se distingue des autres par la forme de ceux-ci et par son effet doré. Sa réalisation dura 25 ans. J'y reviendrai avec des photographies plus tard.

This Week: CTA Stations

Why are trains so fascinating? Why do people who won't ride a bus, ride a train? Houston has a 7.5 mile track of light rail that opened in 2004. That's nothing in a city that is 600 square miles. There is an expansion project that will add more lines and that has caused a lot of political fighting. The linked article says that construction will finish in 2012. I'm not holding my breath, but I will definitely enjoy using the new system when it is in place. I am one of those people that doesn't ride the bus but rides the train. But why?

Not only are there swan boats in the Public Garden but there are also real swans. I love how this duck is looking at the swan and how he might be thinking "you gonna get up soon buddy?" I think he wanted a turn at cuddling up in the nest for a nice nap. I really can't blame him. Nothing better than a mid-afternoon nap.

This Week: CTA Stations

I mostly rode the elevated train around the loop that circles downtown but did find myself in some of the underground subway stations from time to time. I really loved the roar of the train as it would come into the station.

I had taken a bunch of photos last Spring but never posted them because I was posting images from my Italy vacation for months. When I went back and started looking through these Spring photos I came across this one and it was my favorite. I just love the colors.

Not as many flowers in Florida this year. They had a couple weeks of really cold weather before we got here and it did a lot of damage to the flowers and trees. Yesterday, we walked over to Manatee Cove and saw at least 4 dead fish floating in the water. Seems the cold weather had killed them. Thankfully, it's warmed up since we've arrived.
