This is all thats left of a trawler that ran aground in 1976 two men lost their lives. This was shot as you can see in a cloud-less sky, so is a place I'd like to go back to when the tide and clouds are better. Its at Saltwick Bay just south of Whitby.

This was taken after one of the recent big snow storms. The snow was cleared into huge snow mounds, which reminded me of glaciers in Anarctica. The parking lot or "car park" is nearby on my daily walk route.

This Week: In the City II

Street markets and vendors that have set up in one part of the town. I'm pretty sure my family would not have let me go to this area, much less alone, but I really didn't get a scary vibe from it. As in all big cities you have to be smart. I think markets like this are so fascinating.

Friday 12th March I was asked to photograph the UK launch of the Audi R8 Spider at the vast Audi West London dealership. While the journalists dinned on a TV chef's fine lunch my assistant and I dodged the rain showers to shoot the flagship supercar.

Torrent With A View

It's Friday again, no wait, I'm late ;-) So here's another update. I went to this location already last June and spent the whole afternoon/evening there. It's a rather dramatic location, called Kiutaköngäs, near Kuusamo. Might be one of the bigger torrents around here. The location was a little difficult to shoot, but I tried my best to get it done. The rocks very high on other side of the torrent and we’re blocking the last light of the sun, which left them almost in the shadows. Winter would be a better maybe with some sunlight coming from the other direction, but then again, the torrent would be frozen. Maybe in late Autumn again? Let’s see. Forsyth Park, Savannah, GA

One of many St. Patrick's Day traditions here is the yearly Greening of the Fountain in Forsyth Park thus kicking off what is always a grand celebration here. All of Savannah's fountains run green throughout the holiday. Erin Go Braugh!

This old Ivy creeper was covering an old wall at what remains of Kennall Vale Gunpowder Works in Cornwall.

Kennall Vale represents the best-preserved gunpowder works in south-west Britain. The site is a beautiful place, situated in a small valley which is intersected by many small streams and covered with the remains of old water-mills once used to provide power for the manufacturing process. The site is a scheduled monument and is managed by Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Production began in in 1811 but ceased in 1914, following the collapse of the Cornish Tin mining industry.

Having just re-read the autobiography by Don Mcullin I sought to replicate the dark, foreboding look of many of his images of war.

This Week: Varoius and Sundry Works

Welcome spring and especially welcome spring break which starts today for me at 3:30! To say I am happy is an understatement. I had one of the worst spring breaks ever last year and I'm determined to enjoy this spring break to its fullest.

This photo was taken at park in the area of Houston I hope to move to this summer. It has a community garden where people can rent little plots and have gardens or flower beds. It is a wonderful little space. The photo was taken with the Hipstamatic iPhone app which has made the iPhone almost like one of my toy film cameras. It is so much fun and creates wonderful images. You can see some more in this Flickr set.

Gryphon Tea Room, Bull Street, Savannah, GA with reflection of Poetter Hall, Savannah College of Art and Design (aka "SCAD")

I walk by Poetter Hall several times a week and have always wanted to get a unique view of it. This was taken this past Sunday...the Tea Room had closed for the day so I was able to get a really clean shot of the reflection of it in the window.

Just a little side note: Poetter Hall was originally known as Preston Hall, and was SCAD's first building and historic preservation project. SCAD has since purchased and restored many buildings throughout Savannah.

This Week: Various and Sundry Works

Before I had a digital camera, I had a point and shoot film camera like everyone else. Mine was a Canon Advantix and I used it for various things and invariably never developed the film. I finally just threw a lot of stuff away because I knew there was nothing very memorable on it anyway, but I kept one roll of film. I moved it when I changed apartments. I was always very careful with it and always knew where it was. It was the roll of film that had four shots from the Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial.

I'm a huge fan of NASA and manned space flight. It makes my heart soar to think of people exploring space. I was heartbroken when Columbia fell. I was at a solo competition when I heard about the shuttle destruction. I found out in the morning and had to wait all day for the contest to be over before I could get home and watch the news. The summer before the accident I got to see the commander, Rick Husband, at a concert I was attending in San Antonio. His daughter was in the honor choir and they announced that one of the songs from the concert would be used as a wake up call on his next mission. This mission. It was such a happy moment. My worlds collided in the best way. All day at the solo contest I kept trying to remember if this was the mission he was on. This was before I had my always in my pocket iPhone. As soon as I got in the car I flipped on the news and within minutes they were reading the names and there it was.

This was also a difficult time because I was living in Houston. The home of the astronauts. The home of Johnson Space Center. The news was constant and it was sad. A few days after the accident the President came to Houston for a memorial service. That was the first evening I had time to get away and go down to JSC. I grabbed my camera, bought some flowers and headed out there. After I parked and was walking toward the memorial I looked at my camera. Four shots. Four! I took my four shots, paid my respects, shed some tears and was glad I had the chance to have this moment. I came home and took the film out of the camera and put it in a drawer. And it stayed in a drawer for six years. I finally got it developed late last year. Of the four shots only two came out since it was dusk when I was there. Here is one of them. This photo is special to me for so many reasons and brings back so many memories.

Shipwrecked

These logs are not debris from the current storm but one from over 100 years ago. There is an old shipwreck buried under the front beach on my aunt and uncle's property. It's believed this is a ship from the 1800s that was carried away from Plymouth by a storm and grounded on Saquish. We've been able to see pieces of the debris over the years but with each storm more and more of it is being uncovered. Unfortunately, I don't have a very good wide shot of it. Actually, I just discovered if you look at the bottom photo from Monday's shot you can see a wider shot that shows the logs sticking out of the sand.

I could be wrong about the facts in the shipwreck story so if you know it please chime in with the real information.

This Week: Various and Sundry Works

The view from my hotel room when I was in Chicago. The desk clerk asked me if I wanted a room with one or two beds. I told him I wanted the one with the best view and I have to say I was pretty happy with the selection. Navy Pier is in the distance as is Lake Michigan. I have to say just about everything was nearly perfect for this trip. No trips this year because I am going to work on paying off my credit card. Once that is done I will have a lot more financial freedom to take a lot more trips.

I promised a passer by something a little different, for the most photographed mine in Cornwall.

I hope that this shot delivers just that - an image that breaks away from the conventional, stereotypical images that abound on the internet of this mine.
