Most of the buildings on the Downtown square were built just after 1900. Baker's Furniture has occupied various buildings on the south side for many years and the store's success has seen the family open other furniture stores in the region.

Island Princess

Yesterday, Mom and I took the Island Princess tour. Unfortunately, Dad had to stay home and wait for the cable guy. Since arriving in Florida we have not had a tv. Which hasn't been too bad since we didn't have to listen to any of the politics. We were able to watch movies on the DVD player so at night we'd just put a movie in. However, we wanted to make sure we had the cable working in time for the Super Bowl.

You can see from the photos it was pretty cloudy. It would have been nice to have a little more sunshine but I was glad it wasn't completely sunny as we would have been roasting on the boat. I was surprised at how packed the boat was, I believe they said we had around 98 people on the boat. From the Island Princess website it states:

As you cruise the calm waters of Florida's Intracoastal Waterway, the Captains narration will bring history to life. You'll hear tidbits about Stuart infamous and famous residents as you cruise by their homes, and the Captain will acquaint you with the many bird sanctuaries, spoil islands, and other points of interest.

We did see many famous and inflated homes, as well as lots of historical information from the Captain. We didn't see as much wildlife as I had hoped but we were lucky enough to see a few dolphins and I caught a glimpse of a manatee.

Later in the day, Mom and I played a game of Bananagrams and watched some tv. Today sounds like it may be a bit cloudy again so we might go to the movies and relax most of the day. Only the weekend left and then I head back on Monday.

After Morgan Music came Larry Morgan Music. The name Morgan has long been synonymous with music, once being the largest sound and music supplier in the Southwest. All the great entertainers—Hendrix, Joplin, Z Z Top, and tons more—either walked through the doors in Downtown Garland or stepped on a stage with equipment from Morgan's. And all the sales people drove Corvettes. To commemorate that long music period, Larry commissioned a mural for the outside of his store by a famous New York graffiti artist. Only the city considered murals to be signs and halted the work until a permit could be approved. Meanwhile the artist returned east, Larry died, and the mural slowly peels, interrupted.

Flower Felon

My Mom likes to snip flowers from the plants outside businesses when we take our morning walk. Or as my Dad says, "she's a flower felon." So, far she hasn't been caught or the owners don't mind her taking one here and there. They are pretty and look nice on the kitchen counter.

Yesterday, we had lunch at the Dolphin Bar at Jensen Beach. We all had the bowl of shrimp and lobster bisque and it was delicous! As you can see mine was all smiles :-). After lunch we headed over to the Barbours Produce stand. They have a great selection of fruit and vegetables for a really good price. The only problem is that they have a small parking lot and it's crazy trying to get in and out of the place. You always hear people beeping at each other but I've yet to see an accident.

After we came back home, sat out by the pool and read our books. Later we took wine and a Ginger Ale down to one of the parks and had a drink while the sun set. Supper was chicken salad, left overs from last night's grilled chicken, on top of a salad. It was delicous. For dessert we had keylime pie and watched Crazy, Stupid, Love. Another day in paradise :-)

It's nice to be able to celebrate the 1st of February in sunny Florida. Yesterday, it was in the low 70s and a bit windy but still beautiful. Mom and I went for our morning walk. We were hoping maybe to see one of the wild parrots and ended up seeing close to 20+ parrots (I'll post a photo next week)! On the way back from our walk we were treated with a baby manatee swimming along side the walkway in Manatee Pocket.

By late morning we were off to Publix to go grocery shopping. Once back I heated up yesterday's leftovers of my grouper sandwich. Then Mom and I walked out on the dock, sat on the bench and enjoyed the sunshine. By mid-afternoon I was talking my nap and then when I got up Mom and I watched Chicago. Dad was off running errands, playing on the computer and reading a book.

At sunset I walked down to the water to get a few shots of the sunset. Walking back I saw Dad out at the grill and sat outside with him while he cooked the chicken. It felt nice to be able to sit outside at 6:30pm. The chicken was delicious and it really felt like summer. We are settling in nicely to the Florida lifestyle. Of course, I have to head back in less than a week but I'm going to enjoy it while I'm here.

On the Road Again

Mom, Dad, and I packed our bags and were on the road Saturday morning at 6:13am. The first night we made it to Richmond, VA and stayed at the Clarion Inn. The hotel was rated three stars but none of us felt it deserved that many. The nicest thing about it was that attached to the motel was this 50s/60s dinner. The food was good but mostly it was just nice being able to walk back to the room instead of having to drive.

The Comsat Angels " Waiting for a Miracle" album cover photo shoot image 1980

I had an e mail from a Comsat Angel fan last year asking if I could buy a print of the photograph I took for the cover of the " Waiting for a Miracle" debut album cover. I remember shooting the image on a deserted motorway at night but as with many images from that era the record company never returned transparencies or they were lost in my files. Well while looking for other old and interesting photographs this image showed up which was very close the the published cover shot. I even found a group image of the Indie band shot with their native Sheffield in the background. Perhaps the fan will try me again for a print, but they will now be filed in my archive!

Florida Journal

Every year that my parents have been driving down to Florida (I think this is my 5th year driving with them) my Mom has kept a journal along the way. Basically, it's been a notebook where she writes in the gas prices, mileage, where we've stopped and anything interesting that we may have seen on our travels. Last year she filled the notebook she had and I decided we should have a real Florida journal for this year's trip. I made this one on Shutterfly. I was very impressed with the paper quality and the cover printing came out great.

If all went well we should be arriving in Florida today around noon time. Here's hoping for a week of warm weather and sunshine (and of course wine...for them, not me)!
