Mirror Project: iPhone 3GS

I got the new iPhone a few weeks ago and I love it. I was already an iPhone user, but I only had the first version. I did not upgrade to to the 3G when that came out last year so this was a big upgrade for me. My favorite thing about this other than the much faster 3G speed and having GPS? The camera of course! I'm still getting the hang of it, but right now I don't see a need to carry my pocket camera anymore. Yes a pocket camera has many more options, but this is smaller and I will always have it with me. As for video cameras? Forget it. Check out this video I shot last night with the iPhone of 4th of July fireworks. iPhone wins.

I was chasing this blue butterfly down

the road when a car came by and clipped me.

It was nothing serious, but it angered me and

I turned around and cursed the driver who didn't

even slow down to see if I was hurt. Then I

returned my attention to the butterfly which

was nowhere to be seen. One of the Doubleday

girls came running up the street with her toy

poodle toward me. I stopped her and asked,

"Have you seen a blue butterfly around here?"

"It's down near that birch tree near Grandpa's,"

she said. "Thanks," I said, and walked briskly

toward the tree. It was fluttering from flower

to flower in Mr. Doubleday's extensive garden,

a celestial blueness to soothe the weary heart.

I didn't know what I was doing there. I certain-

ly didn't want to capture it. It was like

something I had known in another life, even if

it was only in a dream, I wanted to confirm it.

Piazza del Popolo

We did a lot of walking in Rome (as we had done in southern Italy). Basically, we just got up in the morning, ate breakfast and then headed out the door. I can't remember our destination (possible the Spanish Steps) but we had decided to walk along the Tiber River and ended up walking through the Piazza del Popolo. This shot is taken from Pinician Hill looking down onto Piazza del Popolo.

"The Piazza del Popolo is a square in Rome. The name in modern Italian literally means "piazza of the people", but historically it derives from the poplars (populus in Latin, pioppo in Italian) after which the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in the northeast corner of the piazza, takes its name.

The Piazza lies inside the northern gate in the Aurelian Walls, once the Porta Flaminia of ancient Rome, and now called Porta del Popolo. This was the starting point of the Via Flaminia, the road to Ariminum (modern Rimini) and the most important route to the north. At the same time, before the age of railroads, it was the traveller's first view of Rome upon arrival. For centuries, the Piazza del Popolo was a place for public executions, the last of which took place in 1826."

This is one of the two statues located on top of a hill bear Betancuria, the ancient capital of Fuerteventura. This is a pseudo-HDR made from a single raw file processed into three tiff files with different exposures. The HDR processing is a bit stronger than what I usually do, but I think it serves well the sensation of power and the massive look of the subject. Please let me know what you think.

Voici une des deux statues situées au sommet d'une colline près de Betancuria, l'ancienne capitale de Fuerteventura. C'est un pseudo-HDR créé à partir d'un unique fichier raw converti en trois fichiers tiff avec trois expositions différentes. Le traitement HDR est un peu plus marqué que ce que je fais habituellement, mais je pense que cela sert bienla sensation de puissance et l'aspect massif du sujet. N'hésitez pas à me dire ce que vous en pensez.

We picked a good week in April to be in Italy. It just happened to be Culture Week, where the objective is to increase cultural knowledge and the appreciation for the italian arts. This meant that museums and certain attractions were free. We were able to go to Pompeii and Herculaneum for free as well as a couple of museums. Crypta Balbi is one of those museums. We happened to be walking by this museum and decided to check out the entry fee- bonus it was free. It was a very interesting museum. I didn't have many images from it but I did take these few shots. I liked how they had pieced together parts of the arches and had the wire frame for you to see how it would have looked. The bottom images shows a shot of some of the many, many artifacts they had inside this museum.

"The specificity of the Crypta Balbi, in the context of the National Roman Museum, is to be a museum of urban archeology, and research that documents the evolution of that space, its settlements and its uses through the centuries.Particular attention is devoted to documenting findings crafts (materials, tools, production) activities in the place postclassica and early age, emphasizing the continuity of work and also the quality of products, generally considered centuries "obscure", between VII and X.

The exhibition aims to show the evolution over time of activities and settlements, presents findings occurred locally, but also findings from other sites, and is very organized and well documented, including from an educational perspective, describing not widely Only the exhibits on display, but also the historical contexts to which they refer."

Sometimes clients get in the way of good work. Rarely, but sometimes. And I know they probably have good reasons. Like this photo, which was shot for an article to run in Parade featuring the program that I believe is called "Sports Done Right" where they discourage the fierce competitive nature in high school sports. It's all about the playing now isn't it? Sort of like life... it's about what you do day to day, how you treat the folks you meet along the way, and how you give & receive love... [I know I lost a few of you right there... but hey, loosen up and open your heart, even just for a moment. It feels good.]

So this photo never ran... the story was bumped due to some silly celebrity doing something moronic. Then I looked back on it about a year later and thought "Hey, I bet that would look really sweet in my portfolio... with a dash of this and a sprinkle of that..."

Much to my surprise, I didn't take that many photos while at the beach over the weekend-guess I just needed a break from everything, including *gasp* my camera! Or, being that it was 99 degrees (105 with heat index), I think it was just too damn hot to do anything but keep your toes in the ocean! I did get a few shots in, though...the weekend would have felt oddly incomplete otherwise.

Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II

While it's quite the architectural masterpiece this building is extremely ostentatious. Although, it was a good landmark to help me find my way around. You could see the statues on top of the building from very far away.

"The Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II) or Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) or "Il Vittoriano" is a monument to honor Victor Emmanuel the first king of a unified Italy. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill. The monument was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1895; sculpture for it was parceled out to established sculptors all over Italy. It was inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1935.

The monument, "chopped with terrible brutality into the immensely complicated fabric of the hill", is built of pure white marble from Botticino, Brescia and features majestic stairways, tall Corinthian columns, fountains, a huge equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel and two statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas. The structure is 135 m (443 ft) wide and 70 m (230 ft) high. If the quadrigae and winged victories are included, the height is to 81 m (266 ft). The base of the structure houses the museum of Italian Reunification.

The monument was controversial since its construction destroyed a large area of the Capitoline Hill with a Medieval neighborhood for its sake. The monument itself is often regarded as pompous and too large. It is clearly visible to most of the city of Rome despite being boxy in general shape and lacking a dome or a tower. The monument is also glaringly white, making it highly conspicuous amidst the generally brownish buildings surrounding it, and its stacked, crowded nature has lent it several derogatory nicknames. Romans sometimes refer to the structure by a variety of irreverent slang expressions, such as “Zuppa Inglese”, "the wedding cake", and "the false teeth", while Americans liberating Rome in 1944 labeled it "the typewriter",a nickname also adopted by the locals. Despite all this criticism, the monument still attracts a large number of visitors. Former President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi fostered the opening of the Vittoriano as a public forum and viewpoint over the City core. This new accessibility allowed visitors to become familiar with the landmark, enabling it to grow in popular, if not critical, reputation."

I did one of my more fun senior photo sessions last week with Megan, a senior at Belt HS. We did the session on her family's massive and beautiful ranch and had the fortune of great light. We were worried for a short while that a storm would hit, but it passed just north of us and we were left with a mostely cloudy sky with awesome clouds. These were some of my favorites from the session.

I have another shoot in a similar location tomorrow evening. I'm pumped!

I love how this flower photo turned out. I used close-up lenses screwed onto the front of my lens, and also shaded part of the flower from the sun with a big piece of paper (it was a very hot sunny day). The close-up lenses gave a really nice shallow depth of field, which makes most of the photo look kind of painterly to me. It took me more than an hour on the internet to find the name of this flower. And I decided I really don't like the name at all. It is called a Large Flowered Beardtongue. An unattractive name for a beautiful flower.

Once we settled into our hotel we went out to explore our surroundings. The closest ruins to us is called, Largo di Torre Argentina. It is a square that once held four Republican Roman temples, and the remains of Pompey's Theater. This is also where Brutus stabbed Julius Ceasar in 44 BC.

While we were checking out this site we noticed a cat roaming (pun intended) around in the ruins. Then we saw another one to the left, one behind a column, another sleeping in the grass. We counted at least ten cats at one point. As we wondered why all the cats gathered in this spot (which we aptly named the catacombs) we started walking around to the other side of the square and saw the big sign that said Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary. Come to find out the ruin was now a no-kill shelter for homeless cats (of which Rome has many). I find it rather humorous that an ancient ruin has been made into a cat sanctuary. I also think its wonderful that someone is looking out for these cats.

After the "tour" otherwise known as a history of the company given over the microphone the beer taps are opened. For the $5 admission price everyone gets a free tasting glass and four tokens to use at the taps. I guess the photographers were more interested in taking pictures than drinking beer. They do have a very nice root beer as well.
