Moonrise

My grandmother gave me a call last night to suggest I go out today at 4:30 to catch the moon rising as the sun set. I ended up getting out a bit late and snapped off a couple mediocre shots here and there before the moon started peeking through the clouds. I was up at the airport at the time which, in Great Falls, sits on a hill that overlooks the city. If you follow my blog, that was my vantage point for this image.

In search of something to include in the frame and add some depth, I ended up settling on this watertower. I have a couple different angles of the scene, and I have a few different processing ideas, so my next couple posts will probably be some sort of variation of what you see here. Be sure to comment and let me know which ones you prefer. Thanks!

This shot i'm not overly happy with - which is a shame because I think the original has potential due to the shaft of light that runs across his face. I'd be interested to here anyones thoughts on this one as regards post-processing.

This Week: Via Colori 2008

Via Colori is a street painting festival put on nation wide to benefit various charitable organizations. The Houston event was held last weekend and was sponsored by the Center for Hearing and Speech. More than 175 artists created works of art on the streets of downtown Houston with pastels. We all remember drawing with chalk in our childhoods, but this is taking chalk drawing to whole new level.

In 1628, Plymouth was visited by the Dutchman named Isaac de Rasieres, and he wrote a more detailed description of what he saw:

"New Plymouth lies on the slope of a hill stretching east towards the sea-coast, with a broad street about a cannon shot of 800 feet long, leading down the hill; with a crossing in the middle, ... The houses are constructed of clapboards, with gardens also enclosed behind and at the sides with clapboards, so that their houses and courtyards are arranged in very good order, with a stockade against sudden attack; and at the ends of the streets there are three wooden gates. ... Upon the hill they have a large square house, with a flat roof, built of thick sawn planks stayed with oak beams, upon the top of which they have six cannon." (information taken from the Mayflower History website)

This shot was taken from the fort on the hill ("large square house"). I almost had to sit on one of the canons to see out the window. If you look straight out at the ocean you can see a small piece of land. That would be Saquish. A lot of my shots over the summer were taken out at Saquish. You'd have to zoom in really close to see the lighthouse.

The Christmas card

The requisite brothers-three portrait for the Christmas card. Mum doesn't like to be in them I suppose.

My grandfather has this great silver-grey siding on his garage and with all three of us wearing black coats and black scarves it made a perfect backdrop. Of course, my brothers' red hair and red beards make for a pretty cool splash of color too. And then the snow, though unwanted isn't too much of a distraction (except for that one streak right on my right eye). Kind of cool in fact. The almost two feet of snow at our feet however made for a really dramatic reflection from below so I decided on a low angle to make some good use of it; otherwise, I think it would've looked all wrong, so I suppose you sometimes take the angle that's given to you.

First of all, my apologies for not posting in so long, but it's for good reason. I've dedicated a decent chunk of my break to finishing up my website redesign and I'm really close. I'll keep you all posted for it's launch date.

Now, I've mentioned before that I don't know a thing about flowers; I'm at a complete loss. So, whenever I need to know the name of a particular plant, I consult my mother who is as much of an expert as I know on the subject. She didn't know this one off hand, so we looked it up and the closest match I could find was the Bulbet-bearing Water Hemlock.

This is a shot from the archives: I took it in late Summer 2007 soon after I had arrived out at school. So, seeing as I was in Minnesota at the time, maybe Debbie over at Paddletramp Photography can give me a hand with identifying this little guy.

Another week has passed and again I had no chance to go out shooting. It's horrible, but at least from this point on it can just get better. So another one from the archives.

I got a little earlier off work, and used the chance to head out to the close beach before the last sunlight disappeared completely. The water was unusually low and some rocks and seagrass showed up.

Post processing wise this image has seen some adjustments in Lightroom and my usual final touch in PS using some color adjustments in LAB mode.

Thursday of this week that just passed was a really good day for skies. The clouds were very broken up and the sun was setting. I decide to capture them from a reflective source. Standing facing the house, I was able to capture everything on my left from the reflective vehicle that was on my right including, the clouds, trees, another car, and the most far left side of the house. The reflective black car image, you can also see thru the passenger window, the white deck that is connected to left side of the house. There was also so some reflection of the red mulch onto the vehicle. The side mirror also reflected on itself capturing a little blue and white sky. I found it interesting to work with.

This Week: Architecture Walking Tour

Loved the light streaming through the trees on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. The best part about the walking tours is just walking in the (mostly) pleasant weather in beautiful areas of town hearing interesting stories from the past.

Zephyr is normally gentle, quite humorous, but also difficult to interpret. He always has the same facial expression know matter if he is content or he just beat up a dog. The above image was taken at night after he just swatted a Kerry blue Terrier in the face a few times. He walked away and then perched himself a top of a soft couch.
